Ashton Court Estate
Ashton Court Estate is situated on the A369 Bristol – Portishead Road half a mile from Clifton Suspension Bridge. The main entrances are off the A369 at Kennel Lodge Road for the mansion and centre of the estate and at Clifton Lodge for the golf course and top of the estate. It was once the home of the Smyth family, but was given to the City of Bristol in the 1930s by Lady Greville Smythe.
There is an Ashton Court Discovery Pack, Maps, Nature Trails available from Ashton Court Visitor Centre which also has a cafe. The visitor centre is situated in the stable block of the mansion where you can also learn about the history of the estate. There are tours of the mansion on selected weekends and banqueting facilities are available. The estate grounds are a nationally important site for wildlife. Red and fallow deer have been here since the 1300s.
The estate hosts several events a year, including, the Ashton Court Free Festival in July with live music and arts, the North Somerset Show and the International Balloon Fiesta in August. Hot air balloons launch on a Sunday afternoon when the weather is fine and there are night glows set to music, finished off by an impressive firework display. In September there is a magnificent two day International Kite Festival. There are plenty of activities including an orienteering course with a map available from golf kiosk, miniature railway that runs fortnightly spring to autumn, mountain bike and horse trail, footpaths links to the Community Forest path, Long Ashton and Abbots Leigh. The Avon Cycle Way runs from Long Ashton through the estate to Clifton Lodge. There are also lots of quiet spots for the family to relax. There is partial disabled access with many of the paths suitable for wheelchairs. Ashton Court Golf Course lies within the estate with stunning views across the city. There are two 18 hole par 3 courses run by Clifton College. Both courses are open to new-comers on a ‘Pay & Play’ basis and all age groups and abilities are welcome. There is free car parking and club hire available (if required). It is open from 8.00am - dusk. Access may be restricted on some major event days.
